Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people, the traditional owners of the land Mickleham Primary School is on, and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging and to any Koorie people joining us today.

We would like to acknowledge the children of the past, present and future who have grown up, learnt and played with friends on this land.

We would like to acknowledge our country and nature, including: trees, grasses, flowers, birds and insects. Our Bluestone building represents our community’s past and we are the future.

Acknowledgement of Diversity

We acknowledge and respect the differences between us. We understand we all come from different cultures, and we have different opinions and needs. We are all equals and cooperate as we play a role in our school community.

The above statements were written by our children and staff through our Koorie Action Group and Diversity Leaders.

Stronger Together

As we continue to promote this school-wide theme, we have planned many opportunities for families to be involved in school events and activities. During Term 2 that included Twilight School and yesterday’s ‘Celebration of Learning’ during which children presented the work they have done this term. Several parents have been involved in helping out with running the Mother’s Day stall and organizing the upcoming Father’s Day stall, as well as helping out in the Canteen.

Term 3 is going to be equally busy – please be sure to check the calendar on the website to make sure you know what is happening. We are very mindful of the increasing cost of living and have ensured we have planned the events we shared with you during our Information Night at the beginning of the year.

Some of Term 3’s events include: Prep Science Night, 100 Days of School celebration and Lullabies; Grade 1/2 Science Works excursion, Grade 2 Sleepover and Grade 1 Breakfast at School; Grade 3/4 Museum excursion and chicken hatching, Grade 5/6 Camp Nillahcootte (keep your fingers crossed for some snow fall over the next four weeks so we can make snow balls!) Whole school events include: Book Week – including the Book Fair and illustrator visit, Father’s Day stall, Footy Day and a Curriculum Day towards the end of term.

During August we will have a major focus on building positive relationships between children. Using our SWPBS Matrix, we will discuss ways to resolve disagreements in sensible and calm ways. The week of August 17 – 21 is National Bullying No Way! Week. Teachers have planned numerous activities to develop awareness of what bullying is and what it is not. We will culminate with a wear something purple day and the unveiling of our Friendship Seat and tree.

We are also very pleased to announce that the COLOUR RUN IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! The children loved this event last year as did the many parents who came to watch. It was our biggest fundraising event EVER! Please start thinking about who you can ask to help raise funds for our school. Children will receive their log-in information early next term so they can set up a profile and start setting goals for the prizes they wish to earn.

Please look for ways you can get involved, these moments are important to your children, they are excited to share them with you. It is scary to consider how quickly time seems to pass; we need to treasure every moment.

Attendance:

Yesterday, we conducted our attendance Hot Chip Lunch for Term 2. Amazingly, forty-five children have not missed a single day of school this term!!! In the past, we celebrated children who missed three or four days per term; however, attendance is now so high that we have many children with perfect attendance. Congratulations to these children and their families. Our hope is that next term we can reduce the number of children who arrive late, multiple days each week.

Basketball Court:

The builders who have been invited to tender to complete the work to upgrade our basketball court, visited the school last week to view the site. The Department will consider their submissions and select the most suitable. The entire surface will be removed and replaced, drainage corrected, and new line markings laid. In addition, the undercover area will be sprayed and rust proofed. I will let you know when I know more about the timing of the work, which is likely to occur during a school holiday break.

Traffic:

PLEASE be sure you read the road safety messages below. It is critical that you, as the important adults in your children’s lives, set a good example. Please read the following list and follow these instructions – you run the risk of a significant fine and having to live the rest of your life knowing you injured or killed someone around the school.

  • Drive slowly and stop at the crossing. Just this week a family of the school drove through a crossing with children on it and a grandmother was almost hit crossing the road – on the crossing
  • DO NOT CROSS ANYWHERE ELSE – we monitor the Lagoon Avenue crossing. If you cross the road anywhere but the crossing, you have a much greater risk of being hit. You are also teaching your children dangerous behaviours
  • DO NOT WAIT FOR THE FIRST SPOT!!! Please move along the road – your children can walk to get to your car
  • DO NOT drop off or pick up in the middle of the road. It is both dangerous and selfish. You are holding up all of the cars behind you
  • DO NOT do a u-turn at the drop off area – you are illegally close to the crossing and may be fined

We wish you all a safe and restful holiday break. See you all back at school on Monday, July 13th.

Grade 1/2

Inquiry

This term, students have been learning about how everyday objects provide clues about life in the past by examining the materials, technology, and designs of historical playthings. They have developed their knowledge, compared how toys and daily life has evolved across generations, constructed timelines, paper dolls, family trees and created a keepsake box to put precious things in to share with future generations. The students are very excited to share their learning at the upcoming Celebration of Learning in week 10.

Milania – We are making keepsake boxes to put in our special things.

Emina – Everybody made their own family tree out of paper. We all have families, but not all families are the same.

Ayansh – I like to make the paper dolls because I liked it

The Rock Who Wanted to Be Big. by Aiza

One day a tiny very tiny rock named Mia wanted to be big! The rock asked everyone the same question “Should I be big?” It did not go as planned. They said no? “What?” But she did not listen. She tried as much as she could to fit in! But her friends realised… She was getting mean and trying too hard to fit in. Her friends tried talking to her. She did not listen. So they made lots of plans but failed… they felt like they lost a friend forever. But they did not give up on their friend! They found the right day and then a right day Mia wasn’t busy. So once everyone was set they came and said to Mia You don’t have to be perfect. Just be the way you are because being different is ok. You are unique, brave, awesome, just be yourself! Then Mia realised you don’t have to be perfect and being different is cool and unique. The end.

SEL (Social emotional Learning)

During our Ready to Learn sessions, students practised having a Growth Mindset and explored how when things feel hard. We don’t give up because we know our brains are growing. They continued to develop their understanding of the R.I.C.H Values by learning how to work in teams and how to speak up for ourselves respectfully and confidently.

MuhammedWe found out that being responsible means doing what we should do when we should be doing it. If we know it we should show it. I know that I am responsible for me.

Maths

In Maths this term we learnt about place value, patterns, 2D shapes & 3D objects, and addition and subtraction.

Isabel – I am super proud because I finally learned how to draw a 3D cube!

Isa – I learned how to do bricks in maths and not give up

Noah – I learnt the CUBES strategy so I can do better maths

Ellajayne – In maths I learned how to make a pattern.

How to draw a cube. by Elliott and Ryker

First draw a square, next draw another square just like it, but a bit higher. Last join the corners with the other lines to make the sides of the cube.

Twilight School Family Feedback

Thank you to all our community members who completed the Twilight School Family Survey! We are always seeking ways to improve our community connection and without you it would not be possible!

Daniel has been working hard installing the rocks we decorated that showcase all our different families and their ideas. Please come and have a look at this located outside the Bottlebrush building.

Twilight School is one of our highest attended community events, with only a handful of families unable to attend.

We had over 80 responses for our feedback form.

Over 95% of our children thoroughly enjoyed the activity and their highlights were having their family visit their school, being at school when it was dark and having glowsticks.

94% of our parents who attended said they also enjoyed the evening! The suggestions from our families for future events included an end of year celebration/performance, student-led conferences and a summer picnic!

Stay tuned for future events organised with our Community and Fundraising Committee and school staff.

Positive Behaviour Recognition

This term we have introduced our ‘Positive Behaviour Recognition Notification’ to families! Students who are selected are those who are showing our schools’ RICH values in the classroom and in the yard! Students may also receive tokens, which they can accumulate and spend at our token shop on a variety of items chosen through student suggestions.

If your child receives a Positive Behaviour Recognition you will receive a message and an email notifying you. To find out more details about this you will need to open COMPASS, click onto your child’s name and you will be able to see more details about when, why, what occurred and which teacher acknowledged their positive behaviour.

The message will appear below with the teacher’s name and all the information attached to the positive recognition.
